Chasseneuil Sur Bonnieure

There are bars, restaurants, shops, cinema and even a covered swimming pool to name but a few of the extensive facilities the town has to offer as well as local and traditional open French markets.

Of particular interest is the resistance Memorial in memory of the 2029 martyrs of the Resistance and the fallen soldiers from the Charente and Charente-Maritime. The construction of the resistance memorial began in 1945 on the initiative of Colonel CHABANE and members of the BIR’HACHEIM maquis.

It was inaugurated in 1951 by the President of the Republic VINCENT AURIOL.

The national necropolis gathers on two hectares the bodies of 2029 resistance fighters and soldiers of the Second World War. 21 meters high, the Resistance Memorial overlooks the forests where the region’s maquis were established.

Its bas-reliefs, veritable books of stone, tell the story of civil and military resistance.

In the crypt of the MEMORIAL lie the bodies of the main warlords.
